Yes we are idiots. This is not being questioned. You can tell from the way we ignored our neighbour the bike guy's warnings about bikes getting stolen from his back yard in the past...

I still have mine thankfully, apparently mine was just too weird to steal and needed to be moved aside (pretty much right in front of the front door in fact) in order to allow easier stealing of [livejournal.com profile] uniquecrash5's bike. Where this really incredibly sucks is that it was the main way he was getting to and from work lately, for free as opposed to me driving him (gas money which adds up) or him taking the bus (which also costs money, quite a bit if you add it up on top of what we HAVE to pay for the car despite not driving it), and of course we basically have none.

Part of me is a bit paranoid about it, thinking it might be the asshole who bought our dryer- That's why I was in such a state yesterday... On top of a number of smaller annoyances, the dryer came back to us (and the money that came to us for it has left) because dude who bought it tried it for all of about 30 seconds before deciding it didn't work despite my having been straight up with him that it was an older dryer. Older gas dryers do not provide instant gratification in the heat department, and he seemed like the kind of guy who knew that when I sold it to him. When he called to tell me I'd sold him a broken dryer he was a complete bitchy ass about it, even after I IMMEDIATELY apologized quite sincerely, since LIKE HELL would I ever sell something to ANYONE that doesn't work without making that clear, especially not to someone who as a result of buying the thing is going to know where I live! That sounds like an easy way to get beat up, so WTF? We've posted it again, and will amply warn whoever asks that some dork-ass who tried it briefly thinks it might be broken, but that we'd sincerely appreciate if they took the time to insure they properly install and test it before returning it, and politely request that they simply return it instead of getting all snarly and angry at me for wasting their time. I so totally didn't need the snarly, and don't feel like I deserve it. I mean seriously, I told the dude that since I have no gas hook-up in the house I couldn't be deadly sure, I was just mostly sure, and he was acting like I had gone out of my way to rip him off. You buy a used dryer, you run the risk of it acting USED. I hate people sometimes.

So indeed a small part of me wonders whether dude was still irked because of the having to make the trip with the large heavy object, so much so that he took time to notice that we don't lock the bikes to the porch, and came back and threw the good one in his truck to make up for his gas money. I only wonder this because we've had that same bike out there for over a year and it didn't disappear until last night. He apologized to Crash for being so rude to me on the phone when he brought it back, but he was still being kind of a jerk. So maybe it was coincidence, maybe, but not enough that I'm not paranoid. I guess I'll be locking my bike from now on anyway, even though I highly doubt it would attract anyone enough to steal it.

And it's not really the end of the world either. The bike guy might still have a few more cheap-ass bikes though he's been unloading them vigorously lately, and if he doesn't then Value Village has some nice ones and hopefully something in there will be cheap enough. Crash is frustrated because he liked that bike and had gotten it free and now he has to BUY another, and the associated dorky feeling we both have from not believing Ed's warnings since the neighbourhood has always seemed so undeniably safe. This was the same day that we went out not realizing the front door wasn't locked, had it BLOW OPEN while we were out, and came home to find everything completely undisturbed despite the door likely having been blatantly ajar and unattended for HOURS. I've also left my car which sits in a fairly obvious spot completely unlocked with valuables just laying around inside quite a few times and no one has noticed, which is funny considering the one of the very few time I did that in Lake Stevens and had a bunch of tapes and my home-made extra-fabulous dog bed stolen from the CRX (who steals dog beds??? That was so weird!). For those not in the know, Lake Stevens the town we last lived in in Washington, a tiny little BFE that is next to the other even tinier BFE that is Granite Falls, on the extra quiet side of the river from Everett, which is the closest "city", despite it being much more of a town- Lake Stevens seemed like it had WAY more crime than this place, by a huge margin. Still we are dorks for not remembering that it only takes one time and one thief to lose your stuff, so we need to be smarter. I just wish the universe would save teaching us the really special lessons for times when they don't suck so hard. Bad timing.

Hrm. If you guys need a bike, mine is still chained up at [livejournal.com profile] lovecraftienne's (unless the supers cut the lock and removed it :))... It's kinda shitty (it was a $100 Canadian Tire bike to start with and I haven't taken the greatest care of it) and will probably need a bit of work to get road-worthy on a regular basis, but you're welcome to it if you want.

When I get back from camping next week, I can even see if it'll fit in my shiny new car if the back seats are down.

That'd be awesome if it's still there. Crash has had some problems sometimes with riding standard-sized frames though, so I feel the need to ask you first how big it is since you're not as likely to have bought your bike extra-tall. ;)

Yeah, it's not very big... I wouldn't call it small either, but then again I'm biased on account of being short.

Sorry to hear it. What suck.

Have you guys checked out The Working Centre for bikes?

http://www.theworkingcentre.org/ct/cycles/cycles.html

Their rebuilt bikes are seriously cheap- like in the $5 range if I recall. I used to volunteer there (mostly on computer stuff) before I got me a work permit. :)

Maybe so, it was Friday night after all, and we do live next to a big house of potentially drunken college students. :)

My neighbor just had his bike stolen last week. It's crappy that this is starting to happen here :-(

[livejournal.com profile] uniquecrash5 has my condolences: I felt crippled after my bike was ripped off, a few years ago. I hope that he finds a sturdy, inexpensive replacement before too long.

And I guess better safe than sorry, even in Canada: lock 'em up, eh? ;)

Oh yes. I still lock the door lots, even when I'm at home because while I've heard about the rampant safety, I've also heard of the occasional home invasion on the news, several here in K-W. I still like to have the lock there to at least let me see who's at the door before they bust it down. ;)

Sorry to read that, coming from the land of oppertunistic crime I still have not totally got out of the old habits of locking everything, putting items of value in the boot (trunk to you lot), that kind of thing.

Heck not to long ago while I was at work a random person walked into the house and asked C if X was around (did not even bother knocking) - she had the wrong house and quicly left embaressed. She then proceeds next door and tried to go in their back door (which was locked) and then rang the door bell - but they did not answer...lol.

Still it freaked C out......
