After all the time we lived in Washington and let them out, and then all the time living in Toronto in an old old house, I finally witnessed something I figured I'd never see...

Uhura was loitering by the front door, I figured because I had pulled the curtain back which makes the porch fascinating to watch sometimes. Then I thought she was playing with her little plastic octopus, so I threw it at her. She didn't react though, so I got close enough to see why.

Uhura finally caught her first mouse. At the age of something like 11, her first mouse.

I've seen her thinking about catching mice before, even sort of encouraged it as reluctant as I usually am to deal with these issues myself. She looked at me very proudly for a moment before skittering into the basement as if to say, "This one is mine, you can have the next one..."

Now for the disgusting task of trying to figure out what she did with it....

Congratulations to Uhura! It will change her life as a cat.

Don't worry about finding the mouse. If it isn't obvious now, it will be soon!!!

My dog Jemma (yes THAT dog) started killing the rampant rabbits in my yard for the first time at the age of 11 this year. Granted they were all babies. She found out how to sit patiently like a cat above their hole (looking much like this picture:

and grabbing them on the way out. She just grabbed them by ths scruff and shook for a half a minute and that was it, didn't rip 'em apart of anything. I had to feel sorry for the baby bunnies a bit but then again, I was getting herds of them (at dozen at a time in the yard) eating everything I had painstakingly grown in the yard.

I hear on the cat pride. It is great to see a critter you love do the stuff it was born to do. Our cat bagged her first bird last week after being an indoor/outdoor cat for only three weeks and being nearly blind in one eye. Much praise was heaped on her and we have been calling her "Killer" ever since.

The only downside was that our 15 month old was the one who found the carcass. The less said about that, the better.
