Sucktastic end to a sucktastic week..
Sep. 2nd, 2006 09:29 pmFirst thing first- K is fine. Mostly.
But we did spend an unfortunate amount of most of today in the ER. Today started yesterday, several times, as K was unable to sleep easily due to having a cough, and also some of his regular digestive issues. This morning he was acting extra slow, and coughing a bunch still. He would pop up from time to time wanting food or whatever, so we assumed it was just a cold until we had him at the library and he was just sitting in a chair. It was then that I truly noticed how weird his breathing had become. It was quick, sniffy breaths. I also noticed he was feeling warm. After we'd had him home for a short while we agreed it was ER time, since the breathing did not get better with rest and tylenol.
The ER went well, considering. We warned everyone what they were in for briefly, and he was really a sport, for him. Minimal screaming as they did the finger test. He was unhappy about wearing the hospital gown, even though I also put one on over my clothing. We had the doctor do everything to one of us whenever possible. Pretend when needed. When he had to go for a chest X-ray, we tried to convince him that he was just getting a special picture taken, but unfortunately he could see right through that one because of the obvious differences in posing. The worst part was the need to do a rather long breathing treatment involving the need to hold a mask over his mouth and nose while some mist streamed out of it. He sobbed and screamed and called out ALL DONE over and over again, and was none too please to hear he was almost done. That was heart wrenching, but weirdly I am getting hardened to those moments when I know it's really the most important thing to keep him in place, even if he's totally unhappy. *sigh* Someday I know, he will steal my car when thinking of that moment, but at least he'll be alive.. After he'd calmed down (quite a long time after) they came back and checked him and his X-rays.. A little bit of pneumonia, and possibly also asthma. We need to get a GP, which is an ordeal in itself, and get it checked out. I think I might also just take him to a walk-in on Tuesday, which is supposed to be the first day of school. Now my head is all full of question marks about that as well. They sent us home with lots of prescriptions, and it's already Saturday.. Not holding my breath on that one. What a sucktastic thing, to be sick on your very first day of actual school.
I am weirdly glad I had been witnessing other folks we know having their kids get pneumonia at the drop of a hat, or I'd have been a lot more freaked out about that, or worse, missed it entirely. What worries me is the asthma. At this point we're going to have one serious BLING of a medic-alert bracelet here, between the nut allergies and everything else... Blarg...
Of course we took him through the McDonald's drive thru after, as he had requested several times while we were there. We were all starving after the long visit, which stretched well into the dinner hour. He was very disappointed with the Mario toy.
The only amusing part was soon after we got home: He had apparently been holding another enormous load in, and finally let it go just a few minutes after we'd settled down to eat. I was upstairs setting him up for a change, and sat down on his little stool so I could get comfy. The change of gravity brought out my own very loud gaseous anomalies, so I laughed at that, and pointed out that Mommies are also quite stinky at times, that he is not alone in his stinkage. He laughed, and said, "Mommy is stinky!" a few times as we tried to complete the change. It took longer than I'd hoped though, since yeah, enormousness, so it didn't end as well as it had begun.. Still, I think it's good that he got to end the day on a laugh.
He crawled into bed right after that with a sippie. He fell asleep before the second segment of Wallace and Gromit, I know because the video tape always rewinds half way through it, and then he always starts screaming so one of us will come fix it. We checked him, and he's not breathing great, but basically okay. We're leaving his door open, and will keep checking, but have been assured we'll likely notice if things are going to get bad before they get worse. I am not shocked, since he looked groggy in the car. Poor little dude.. What a day.

Date: 2006-09-03 01:44 am (UTC)Oh, I have had EXACTLY the same experience with Pip (who has occasional asthma). It's just so heart-rending. At least the sobs and screams mean he's taking nice deep breaths to get the meds where they need to be.

Date: 2006-09-06 08:29 pm (UTC)And I had to do that holding-the-vapor-mask on my little cousin TWICE A DAY for years. Ugh.
Finally they got him a mask that had googly dinosaur eyes on it and scented the weird vapor like bubble gum and it was downhill from there.
