aaaaaaah...
Aug. 3rd, 2006 01:49 pmMy mom was single when I was growing up, so I used to spend the school year with her in Connecticut, and the summers with my grandparents in Ohio so she wouldn't have to pay someone to watch me. I really enjoyed my time in Ohio, even though I missed my school friends, because I loved all the nature near my grandparents. They lived on the coast of Lake Erie near Cedar Point in the little teeny town my mom lives now. I had a rather constant dual perspective. Most of the year I spent in a fairly urban or suburban setting, then summers in a small rural town with old world values. It was.... interesting.
Last night during the thunderstorm I sat out on my porch in my illegal chair and enjoyed the cool breezes and the light rain that managed to get to me. The porch is well built, so it was just a fine misting, the perfect way to end a very blazing hot day. Watching the storm brought me back to summers spent out in the screened in porch at my grandma's house, talking with her as the storms would start in the later afternoon. She would be reading the paper and drinking her scotch and water, and I would be doing the thing that I do.. Just looking. I love watching the way leaves blow around in the wind, and jump when the rain hits and repels. I love witnessing the scrambling of some animals looking for cover, and others coming out as if to celebrate. I love the smells of the damp metallic air as the roads nearby let go of their heat in one toxic gasp. I just love the rain. And not just any rain, it's THIS rain, right here.. I thought moving to Washington would be like having a rain-gasm, but it's just not the same out there. Washington has a thousand different types of rain, but not a one of them can match the quality of a good lake thunderstorm.
Eventually I had to come inside though, and try to go to bed, even though I'd had a lot of coffee during the day. I did the dishes, a bunch of other useful things, and took a nice cool bath. Then I went into our room to go to sleep, where Crash had put in the Death Cab For Cutie album we'd just finally bought- Transatlanticism. I listened to the rain and the music, and thought of Washington. I went through the entire album and restarted it again, not able to sleep, but not in a bad way. It's been a long time since I've been conscious and able to concentrate on music and really listen to it. "Title and Registration" in particular always makes me think of how I came to be in that place, at that time, and everything that came after for better and worse. At the time it felt like the worst thing in the world, but if it hadn't all happened, then I wouldn't be anywhere near where I am today.
Thank you, sky, for a lovely evening of memories and a nice break from the heat. I missed this. Thank you.
In return, I hunted up the video for anyone who, like me, lives under a rock and never saw it before today. Mostly because I can't host the song by itself... yet.. If you're like me and sometimes don't like to see the videos for songs you haven't heard before, close your eyes! :)
