Oh my gosh, it's a fish post!! I really hope the boys don't have anything nasty, because today while cleaning the fish bowls I discovered that the hard water is destroying my sponges. I pulled out one of the last 2 scrubby sponges I had, and used it on all 4 bowls, mostly because I had to. There was no way it could wait any longer, and if I waited until I could go to the store to buy enough scrubby sponges for everyone, then I wouldn't be in Toronto until afternoon, right before I had to leave. Also, it took a lot of effort to get them clean even with a scrubby.

I can tell the fish don't like the water. Everyone's fins are starting to look a little weird in one way or another. D'Argo is actually growing more fin than he's had in a while, but it's weirdly shaped, and mostly white (he's supposed to be blue). Pilot is getting points, Smallberries is getting shorter, and I can't tell what's up with Rygel. I'm going to have to do something about the water situation. I've been filtering the water they use, just using one of those sink top Pur deals, and obviously that's not doing enough. I can't afford to go out and start buying bottled water for 4 fish, so if the fishy fiends out there have any suggestions, I am certainly listening!

Also, D'Argo jumped out of his net as I was trying to put him in his clean bowl! EEEK! But with Crash's help I got him back in the net quickly with only a couple hops on the kitchen counter, which was hopefully pretty clean since I'd been wiping up just before I started cleaning the bowls. I guess we'll see!

Uh oh...are they fighter fish? I had a few who all got big white fins and then they turned completely white and...died. Eep! I hope loss of pigment doesn't equal death for you too.
Good luck!

I did read somewhere that some fish either lose their color, or turn black as they get old. It could be just old age, since D'Argo is my oldest. It's more the way it's growing that has me concerned. I should take a picture!

Do you put the declorinator in the water after it goes through the filter?

Oh yeah.. That's always done. I think the problem is just the heavy minerals settling in the bottom of the bowls and getting totally encrusted there. It's happening in my cat's water dish too, even though I've been filtering that as well. I have to scrub the heck out of everything every few days. I might have to start renting a water softener. I guess I should've taken the hint from the number of water softening businesses there are around here, eh? :)
