local question!
Jul. 11th, 2006 04:22 pmI have a need to take my cat to the vet, and since I have an actual concern, I am thinking I want to find a really good vet..
Basically, the deal is that I got told after Uhura's recent dental treatment (which was just a few days before we moved) that she was showing signs of having an enlarged heart on their ECG. This didn't totally shock me because I've noticed that she's always had a bit of a wheeze, and it's gotten louder over the years I've had her. Since they didn't make it sound terribly serious or urgent, and since her health has always seemed very good besides the occasional wheezing, I've put off reading up about it until now..
It's the kind of thing that will require some tests at the outset to determine which cause is to blame, and then how and if it can be helped at all. It's likely also going to require some fairly regular visits to check to make sure everything is still okay, and likely some medication, perhaps for the rest of her life. This has me wanting a vet who is not only experienced and good, but also terribly honest and flexible, because this is just the kind of situation where I would be likely to get ripped off by a sneaky vet who sees dollar signs any time someone needs longer term care for something. I need to find the kind of vet who wouldn't mind being paid in car washes occasionally, if the need arose, since we are still dorks and the need will sometimes arise, and I don't like killing my pets just because I am poor. I need a vet who understands this. I know they are rare, but I used to work for one (and yes I did end up driving his van through the car wash for him, but he paid, he was just too busy to go himself), so I know they still exist. None of you lovely locals would happen to have such a wonderful vet caring for your pets, or know someone with super-sick pets that has one they've often gone on about being a saint and saving their pet without taking their house? Happily, it's not that bad for me just yet, but I know it could get there, so I'm definitely interested in jumping ahead and trying to take excellent care of her before she gets sick with the help of someone who knows what they're doing.
