Can anyone tell me what's up with William Shatner? I figured him for one of those older actors who took certain (usually amusing) small jobs because he found it entertaining to do so. With his Star Trek fame, I assumed he'd never be hurting for cash like some folks in the industry, since Star Trek is nigh eternal, and always likely to generate some cash. If he really needed the money, there'd always be some fan related work he could pick up, or even just get some fans with a nice place to take him home and feed him for a while. He should not be hurting for semi-interesting work.

And yet I just saw him, for the second time, pimping a personal injury attorney in Western New York...

Er? uh?! The Priceline ads were funny, so that made sense. This just makes me want to start sending him care packages of food and underwear.

Actually, I think he gets paid a lot more for the commercials than he would for anything Trek related, these days, and it's more regualr work. He hasn't really had a regular income besides commercials for quite a while, and IIRC, he has a nice house in California, so it's likely that he really does need the money.

That's very true stuff- I knew a certain would-be celeb in college (smarmy little jerk, won't give him his 15 minutes in my journal by naming him) who paid his entire tuition by doing a Coca-Cola ad, in which the extent of his "work" was standing in place looking quite stupid for about 2 seconds... That's why I figured the Priceline ads and other things I had seen him in were enough to pay his bills. It's just sad that he also has to take ads for rinky-dink ambulance chasers... *shudder* I hope the fancy house is worth it!

Actually, he owned a large portion of Priceline, iirc. And he isn't hurting for cash - he's got one of the two headline spots on Boston Legal and he's been working steadily ever since Star Trek. In fact, he's the only Trek actor to headline more than one non-documentary show after his Trek run ended. Say what you want about him, he's headlined more shows in 30 years than most actors do, ever.

Also, actors make lots and lots of money from commercials (I remember a story about Jason Robbards making 4 million to walk on a wine commercial, hold up a lass a drink from it - no lines said). And name actors tend to do commercials outside the US more often than in, because it doesn't hurt their reputation here to work for ambulance chasers in Canada. :-)

it could be that he'd rather make money then whittle away at what he has... or maybe he's just grown so BORED. I mean seriously, how many years ago was the last big star treck thing he did? It was probably "Generations" and that was a while ago.

And he's got a new show coming soon so you would think he's alright with cash.

He's a freak.
That's all.

Umm... maybe they helped him...

Keep in mind a few years ago his wife died in their pool.
I remember hearing his calling to 9-1-1 and how funny it was.

So MAYBE, just MAYBE they helped him either sue someone for her death or they protected him from being arrested( it was an odd death).

Then again he likes horses. I seem to remember he raised horses. that's an expensive 'habit'.

He so doesn't need the money (he's got Boston Legal now); maybe he's friends with the lawyer in question? Or more likely, he's just bored.

That mare had a foal?

Shatner seems to be one of those guys who always has an Angle, something to keep promoting himself and making money. If it isn't commercials, it's selling signed stuff on eBay or claiming the credit for writing novels that were ghostwritten by somebody else. Strahd, who's met him, says he's one of the biggest money-grubbing jerks he's ever had the misfortune to deal with.

Shatner is awesome

Yes, I have to say, Shatner is awesome. Listen to his album Has Been, watch him mug on Boston Legal, the man has not lost a step.
