I paid for my account a while back because I decided I was having enough fun doing the journal thing to give myself the gift of a few extra pictures and the ability to really monkey with my page, and be able to do polls... I paid for it, uploaded a bunch of icons I had made or had found, and then promptly failed to do another thing except some extra searches. Ah the life of a mom.

I had an idea for my first poll, but I just thought of a better one-

Lately UC5 and I have been discussing having the legal spelling of our son's name changed. You don't need to know it to help out with this, since it's an easy enough yes or no question, but I will allow additional comments in case you do know it and want to say something. I don't put his name in the journal so please don't put it in your comments.

But for background for those who will likely be confused I will briefly sum up:
We call our son by his first middle name. His first name will stay the same and where it is despite the fact that we never use it because the name we call him is a "unique" name and may or may not turn out to be either a hindrance based on some amusing nick names that have popped up that we hadn't thought of, or just people being asshats like they are sometimes. His own grandfather (who is CERTAINLY NOT an asshat, but is being a little stubborn) refuses to call him K and calls him by the first name which can easily be shortened to AL. That was one of the first reasons I ditched it- the first person who called him "big Al" since he is MY SON and I am big, a chill went down my spine as I saw him potentially as a fat teenager sitting in a cafeteria one day trying to peacefully eat his lunch, coke bottle glasses slipping down his nose (except that I will TOTALLY let him get contacts if he wants them) and I don't think I called him A ever again...

So now that we are using the hard to spell middle name, no one seems to be able to spell it. I lived through that one and it's a giant pain in the ass. We've been thinking of simplifying it ever so slightly by dropping ONE LETTER in order to make it more like the more common spelling of his name which IS a fairly common LAST NAME. So here's my thing-

My mom (doesn't it ALWAYS come down to my mom!) seems to think that this change would be YET ANOTHER level of confusion for those who already know him, but the way I look at it, HE'S NOT EVEN THREE for the love of all things statistical... Out of the BAJILLIONS of people he is going to meet in his lifetime, he's met approximately 3%, so I don't think that changing it at this stage of the game is a bad idea AT ALL! Especially since changing it later certainly WOULD BE.

So FINALLY we get to the poll! (SHEESH, took me long enough!)

I picked "eave it", but this :"You have tortured this poor kid enough with 6 middle names!" is not the reason why.

My thoughts are that you guys originally chose that spelling for a reason. If people are having trouble with it, too bad for them. They'll deal. I am vehemently opposed to changing anything to make it easier for *other people*.

Look, I grew up with an extra "r". This is something that I understand. It wasn't a hindrance at all. Yes, people STILL can't spell my name - including Duncan's mom - but it doesn't have any impact on my life. It never did. It never will. I am thankful to have an unusual spelling, and I always have been. I'm certain K will feel the same, too.

P.S. Have also spent the last 10 years with people calling my son "Hayden"...

No regrets. :)

:) I wouldn't do it to accommodate anyone except him and possibly us :) And the reason I chose that spelling at the time was vague and related to my theory it wouldn't get used- the spelling I am thinking of is actually the way it would have gone if it hand ended up the first name like I had wanted it to be originally, so in a way this would actually be a RETURN to NOT ACCOMMODATING anyone :) And also something that would numerologically be better for him (though that isn't staggeringly important AT ALL)

And yeah, we've talked about my H thing so I hear ya :) And do you know I get called all kinds of crap since I made my spelling official?

I blame his whole name sometimes on a rash of pregnancy hormones- if I had my way about it I would likely hack it down to 2, maybe 3, but then we'd start into "which 2" discussions again and I sooooooooo don't want to go there ever again, *cough* Zoidberg *cough*

Does he really have six middle names?

I don't know any of his names (except the last one), so I'm not really qualified to offer an opinion otherwise.

I do have a name that's misspelled with a painful frequency, but I do think that having an unusual name (which mine isn't, really) is something of a character builder.
