I am my own worst enemy
Jan. 26th, 2004 09:48 amI proved the time honored adage "A fool proof system is only as useful as the fool who operates it".
I got a new coffee maker, one which prevents me from doing a couple stupid things I commonly did- Specifically I used to make coffee and forget I had done so until it had sat on the burner long enough to make the "bad smell" that most coffee drinkers know about. If you don't drink coffee, trust me, it's not worth relating. I would also make coffee and be drinking it right up until the last cup or two, THEN forget I still had the machine on and would come back to find the last drops having dried to the completely hot bottom of the carafe (something it says in every manual not to do). I was amazed that I never had to replace the carafe on the thing, and that what actually started to go was the plastic basket part, started cracking like it was planning on disintegrating soon. It wouldn't have shocked me, it occurred to me during the shopping process that I've owned that old coffee maker for over 12 years.
I decided to play a couple things safe, so I got a "straight to vacuum carafe" style that shuts off automatically when it's done brewing. At that point whether the coffee goes cold or nasty is really just your own problem. It also has "Brew Stop" which is actually very common these days, but something I have never had the pleasure of. For me "Brew Stop" meant having the ability to quickly whip the carafe out of the way in order to place a cup underneath and risk burning yourself if you were just too fucking impatient to wait the extra five minutes for it to stop brewing. A Novelty if ever there was one.
But then yesterday the Brew Stop saved my butt. I was doing dishes and had started making coffee and it suddenly occurred to me that I hadn't put the damn carafe in, so if I didn't do it soon it would overflow the basket!! So I quickly put the thing together and jam it under there. I think to myself, "HOW COOL IS THAT! I CAN'T SCREW UP!"
But I spoke too soon.
THIS morning, I make coffee, but I don't do the dishes, in fact I leave the room not noticing that I didn't put the carafe back together properly so it wouldn't push on the Brew Stop thingy to make the coffee flow! So WITH THE CARAFE IN PLACE I managed to overflow the thing :(
Thankfully the bulk of it did end up in the carafe, which was nice because it would have been ALL OVER MY KITCHEN I am sure, but since it was from the top of the basket as opposed to the bottom it was also completely gritty with coffee grounds. I am glad it didn't back up into the machine itself.
*sigh*
