[livejournal.com profile] uniquecrash5 who has been put in the position of "finish the paperwork or never have sex with me again" talked to the car insurance folks today. They still think I suck because I have 2 accidents within the last 6 years. It apparently takes a supervisor to overturn this ruling and that is how we shall go because otherwise there's NOOOOOO way we can afford it. When you hear on the news that the cost of car insurance in Canada is alarming, they ain't just-a-kiddin'.

So please think "she's a good driver" thoughts at the insurance industry for me.. If they decide my hitting a pole in a parking garage while under the influence of pregnancy brain is enough to merit denying me insurance, we're probably going to have to return the thing to my mom. *heavy sigh at the world of hurt that this will unleash*

Canada is working on trying to do something about this because I think I heard something like 40% of ALL drivers in the country simply go without insurance because of the cost. This of course only drives the cost up, but like any Monkey in the Monkeysphere, I can see where this means jack shit when you really need milk and a big bag of diapers and you can't get your kid to hold your hand while you cross the street. It's classist I tells ya.. But I should also take it as a sign that I should get off my environmentally irresponsible ass and learn to like it.

We're trying to go with TD as that's who we can get our discount through.

I went with State Farm because they give discounts to good drivers and seat belts and such. My payment is $24.00 a month.

Sadly, things are different in Canada...

Suddenly I miss America... *sigh*

Yeah, our last plan was a little worse than yours because my husband has a lead foot, but I was planning on leaving him off the darn thing here, and it's STILL going to be $450 or more per month if TD won't take us, and even then it still seems insane- the one guy hubbie talked to at work who has it pays $140. It's just nuts. I don't know how anyone can make that much money, anyone with kids at least...

Not that it helps us in Ontario at all, but insurance has gotten so bad in the Mritimes that the insurance companies are leaving, just not doing business in certain provinces any more, because the regulations in those provinces won't let them charge enough to make money. I beleive that Newfoundland, at least, is having to institute a provincial insurance system because all the private companies won't do business there any more.

The Ontario Liberals promised to do something about run away car insurance, but I'm not seeing them do anything about it.

Yeah, my first instinct is to try to figure out a way in which we can square things away with the import folks and then not register it, just put a cover on it and let it sit. I am betting that will be uncool with the govt. as they probably don't trust I won't just drive it like the other 40% of people who've decided they don't give a shit. I sure hope they do something about the cost soon because I can just imagine what my mom is going to say... *shudder*

And we've already paid the duty and everything... we're so hooped.

Car insurance is NUTS here. Charles is still covered under his ex-wife's insurance because if he were to go on his own, we would be paying something ridiculous like $800 a month (he's a fairly new driver, 5 years or so, and has a few speeding tickets.)
